Junior Rangers it’s time to meet Sami!

Hello Junior Rangers! My name is Sami and I am a Planning Officer for Parks Victoria. I live and work in Warrnambool at the end of the Great Ocean Road on Eastern Maar Country.

I spent 15 years as a Fire Fighter and Ranger before taking on my role as a Park Planner for Assets. So that’s all things built by humans in our parks such as lookouts, campgrounds, walking tracks and bridges.

Why did you become a ranger?

I wanted to have a job where I can protect the natural environment, national parks are our best bits! I love my job because I am designing new park assets for visitors such as you! What is your favourite built asset? I love the boardwalk at the Twelve Apostles because it protects the plants that grow on the cliff tops and gives amazing views for visitors!

What are your passions outside of work?

I am always outside enjoying nature on walks with my dog at the beach, mountain bike rides or kayaking my local rivers. I also love hiking, walking for many days, for long distances, carrying all your stuff with you in a big backpack.

Do you have a favourite animal or plant you’d like to share?

Southern Right Whales are one of my many favourite animals.  They are critically endangered and migrate from Antarctica to Southern Australia each Winter to calf and raise their young. I have always loved whales, I remember as a kid drawing them a lot and asking my parents to drive me down to Warrnambool to see the whales.  It’s the perfect place to watch the whales breaching (jumping out of the water), spy hopping (lifting just their heads up) and tail slaps.

Your favourite park in Victoria?

This is a tough one! I love my local park the most because I am super lucky to live so close to an amazing place and I get to spend lots of time there. It’s called Bay of Islands Coastal Park, its in between Warrnambool and Peterborough at the end of the Great Ocean Road. The park has secret bat caves, rare and beautiful flowers, lookouts, shipwrecks, cool beach nesting birds, impressively tall cliffs, epic sunsets and secret beaches, there is so much to explore!

Sami was a Ranger for the Junior Ranger program!

I used to love running Junior Rangers near Daylesford at Lalgambook (Mt Franklin) in the Hepburn Regional Park on Dja Dja Wurrung country.  There are so many parks and Junior Ranger Programs to explore. A highlight for me was seeing how much fun the Junior Rangers were having pretending to be fire fighters and squirting water from the large hoses.

Thank you Ranger Sami for taking the time to chat to us! We hope to see you soon!
